The Song of Kokopelli
A Song Cycle of the North American Humpback Flute Player
In his first collection of songs, Big Hand explores the ancient Chacoan Culture of the Anasazi people in the high desert of the southwest, the Colorado Plateau. The Anasazi inhabited cliff dwellings and lived in adobe pueblos, creating homes and ceremonial centers 1000 years ago.
Big Hand also examines the importance of maize, or corn, to the Meso-American peoples. "Maize" is derived from the word for "wind." Prairie grass which pollinates through currents of air, it simulates waves in their action and effects.
Mesa Verde, Keet Seel, and Betatakin are examples of Anasazi ruins. The rock art painted on sandstone walls, the echoes voiced in canyons and the aeries circled by golden eagles are experienced in this song cycle, as well as a corn masque or a dance between the clouds and silk maidens.
The Song of Kokpelli is dedicated to Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera.
